Mr. Todd Gaziano, the Director for the Center of Legal and Judicial Studies at the Heritage Foundation, will join UHLC Professor Seth Chandler in a debate on the topic of the recently passed healthcare legislation. Their point of debate will be:

Resolved: The Individual Mandate Is Unconstitutional.

Furthermore, Professor Chandler is a health law expert, and one of the reasons our health law program is ranked so highly in the country. Needless to say, students and faculty will be able to better inform themselves concerning the debate regardless of political/philosophical view.

J. Budziszewski, professor of Government at UT Austin and nationally renowned expert on natural law, and John Hittinger, professor at the Center for Thomistic Studies at University of St. Thomas and expert on natural law, will be discussing the basics of natural law and its role in American jurisprudence.

The Federalist Society is hosting Professor John Baker (LSU Law) today for a lunchtime discussion.  Professor Baker has entitled his remarks, “The Unconstitutional Census,” and will be presenting a stand-alone speech, after which there will be plenty of time for students/faculty to ask questions/harass him.  Professor Baker is a very frequent speaker at FedSoc events, and is an all-around entertaining person to listen to, so come out to hear what he has to say.

The Federalist Society will be hosting Professor Stephanos Bibas today for a lunchtime discussion.  Professor Bibas, a former Supreme Court clerk, will focus him remarks on providing a moral defense of capital punishment.  UHLC professor Adam Gershowitz will offer a short commentary to Prof. Bibas’ remarks, after which there will be some time for questions from students/faculty.

The Federalist Society will be hosting a debate featuring Mr. Kelly Shackelford, CEO and Chief Counsel of Liberty Legal Institute tomorrow during the lunch hour.  Mr. Shackelford will be debating UHLC professor Peter Linzer on an issue currently before the Supreme Court of the United States in Buono v. Salazar.  At issue in the case is whether a war memorial cross, erected in the Mojave Desert (federal land), should be taken down.

Professor David Moore of BYU Law School and Professor Jordan Paust of the University of Houston Law Center will be debating the topic: Is international law U.S. law?

Food will be provided!

Professor, author, and prominent gun rights expert, Dr. John Lott, will be discussing his views of government control over gun rights.

About the speaker:

John Richard Lott Jr. is a senior research scientist at the University of Maryland, College Park. He has previously held research positions at other academic institutions including the University of Chicago, Yale University, the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, and the American Enterprise Institute. He holds a Ph.D. in economics from UCLA, and his areas of research include econometrics, law and economics, public choice theory, industrial organization, public finance, microeconomics, labor economics, and environmental regulation.

Lott is an author in both academia and in popular culture. He is a frequent writer of opinion editorials, has published over 90 articles in peer-reviewed academic journals related to his research areas, and has authored five books, including More Guns, Less Crime, The Bias Against Guns, and Freedomnomics.
